Paul and Anna McAllister begin to implement their plans to bring a railroad and other trappings of civilization to New Mexico Territory while continuing to build Estancia Dos Santos, reduce the animosity between the Apache and white men, and fight the shadowy foe known as 'the Boss'. Their goals; complete the railroad, complete the supporting infrastructure, bring peaceful coexistence with the Apache, and prepare the territory for the looming Civil War.

Long trips, new attacks, growing pains, spies in their ranks, and increasing violence between anti-slavery and pro-slavery groups, stretch Paul and Anna's resources in every direction and at every turn. With the help of their family and friends, new and old, they race against time to complete their plans before the incessant drum beats of war begin in the east.

Paul and Anna McAllister, along with their family and friends want nothing more than to be left in peace as they continue building Estancia Dos Santos into their querencia, a retreat, a place to rest and relax free from all worry. Using the wealth they’ve accumulated for just this purpose, they begin to right historical wrongs and lay the foundations for seeking statehood.

The mysterious ‘Boss’ has other plans for Paul, Anna, and the Estancia.

To thwart those plans US Marshall Paul McAllister and his deputies take up the trail of corrupt officials, bushwhackers, outlaw gangs, and comancheros. It’s a long tortuous trail with stops in Las Cruces, Mesilla, El Paso, Tucson, Colorado City, and Santa Fe, proving yet again that no one is safe from the violence of the frontier.

Now married, Paul McAllister and Anna Jaramillo McAllister, continue building their fledgling Estancia into the refuge they’ve dreamed of. Where family and friends can live a life safe from the violence of daily life in the wilderness of the New Mexico Territory.

Building levees, planting crops, cattle drives, digging for gold, and advancing the use of existing technology rapidly become intertwined with ferreting out robbers,kidnappers, and murderers. Surrounded by high desert mountains, roving hostile Indians, and bushwhackers, Paul and Anna struggle to overcome devious plots, far and near, as well as the mysterious villains behind those plots.

With the help of their family and friends, along with the legendary men and women they meet in their travels, Paul and Anna face all their challenges and challengers head on.

Paul McAllister, an aging military retiree, wants nothing more at this point in his life than to put the wars, cancer, and death of his wife behind him as he numbly glides into his final years doing the only thing he still enjoys – selling weapons and his services as a gunsmith on the gun show circuit of the American southwest.

Driving down the road in the Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico, sandwiched in the few hundred yards between the Robledo Mountains to the West and the Rio Grande to the East, Paul loses consciousness while returning home from a gun show. An hour later, he regains consciousness finding himself swept away on the tides of time. Is he really in the past? Is he dreaming? Is he in the midst of a psychotic episode? So begins his journey of discovery. Along the way, he battles Apache, Comanche, and Navajo warriors, fights bushwackers, discovers his roots, mines gold, finds love and friendship, and makes powerful enemies, all while establishing a home in the Mesilla Valley on the banks of the Rio Grande.
